Backups should never be stored locally since if your network is infected with ransomware, all of your data will be encrypted. It’s worrisome if a client tells me they’re not concerned about their data since it’s stored on Google Drive. Well, guess what? Storing data on platforms like Google Drive, OneDrive, and similar services isn’t any safer because these services synchronize your local data files with the cloud. Which would then allow ransomware to transfer itself and encrypt your files. Offsite backups are crucial for a variety of reasons. Think of it as an insurance policy; you don’t want to lose your business due to a fire or other natural disaster.
So, let’s talk about local backups. I’ve met a lot of clients who had local backups that ran on an automated schedule, only to discover that when they needed to restore the previous backup, it was 5 months old due to a failure. Using automatic schedules also necessitates human interaction, which boils down to having a designated person who is responsible for daily backup monitoring. Offsite backups are still necessary due to physical calamities and human mistakes
Types of backups
Data Backup
The goal of a backup is to generate a copy of the data that can be recovered in the event of a primary data loss. Hardware or software failure, data corruption, or human error, such as a malicious attack (viruses or malware) or inadvertent data deletion, are the most common causes of data loss.
Bare Metal Backups
A failing server or computer can be restored to a fresh one using bare-metal backup. To finish the re-imaging procedure of a secured server to a new hardware device, an identical image is used.
Office 365 Backups
Third-party Office 365 backups are the greatest approach to defend against unintentional or malicious file deletion, user errors, ransomware, and data loss. Microsoft servers are not used to store the backups. If you don’t have a backup of your Office 365 data, you won’t be able to restore a deleted email that you require.
